Artist Statement
For the past several years, my work was focused on the environment, and during the pandemic I actively incorporated recycling and repurposing into my art process.
September 2020 while the fires were raging, having the daunting task of moving 3 boys during the school year and the Pandemic I roamed the house. This process of finding what I had tucked away became my pathway of creating a new way of working, transforming my art practise with creating from what I found, intuitively changing its form or embellishing it. This aided in my processing of the move, purging, recycling, upturning all of the soil of my personal life.
In childhood, I learned from society and family what is appropriate to reveal and what should be kept covered and private starting with how to dress properly. To keep covered.
This concept of what to reveal also was present in my experience as an adopted child. It imprinted into me a vision of the world that is race, color, and lineage blind, without a fixed definition of family or bloodline.
Pleating, wrapping, stitching, dyeing with indigo and shaping my watercolor paintings into sculptural forms and columns, combining painting, sculpture and fiber genres. This enabled me to choose what aspects of each piece to expose or hide, depending on how I interacted with each work.
